Evidence contradicts idea that starvation caused saber-tooth cat extinction

Dec. 26, 2012 ? In the period just before they went extinct, the American lions and saber-toothed cats that roamed North America in the late Pleistocene were living well off the fat of the land.

That is the conclusion of the latest study of the microscopic wear patterns on the teeth of these great cats recovered from the La Brea tar pits in southern California. Contrary to previous studies, the analysis did not find any indications that the giant carnivores were having increased trouble finding prey in the period before they went extinct 12,000 years ago.

The results, published on Dec. 26 in the scientific journal PLOS ONE, contradicts previous dental studies and presents a problem for the most popular explanations for the Megafaunal (or Quaternary) extinction when the great cats, mammoths and a number of the largest mammals that existed around the world disappeared.

"The popular theory for the Megafaunal extinction is that either the changing climate at the end of the last Ice Age or human activity -- or some combination of the two -- killed off most of the large mammals," said Larisa DeSantis, assistant professor of earth and environmental sciences at Vanderbilt, who headed the study. "In the case of the great cats, we expect that it would have been increasingly difficult for them to find prey, especially if had to compete with humans. We know that when food becomes scarce, carnivores like the great cats tend to consume more of the carcasses they kill. If they spent more time chomping on bones, it should cause detectable changes in the wear patterns on their teeth."

In 1993, Blaire Van Valkenburgh at UCLA published a paper on tooth breakage in large carnivores in the late Pleistocene. Analyzing teeth of American lions, saber-tooth cats, dire wolves and coyotes from La Brea, she found that they had approximately three times the number of broken teeth of contemporary predators and concluded, ." ..these findings suggest that these species utilized carcasses more fully and likely competed more intensely for food than present-day large carnivores."

The latest study uses a new technique, called dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA), developed by co-author Peter Ungar at the University of Arkansas. It uses a confocal microscope to produce a three-dimensional image of the surface of a tooth. The image is then analyzed for microscopic wear patterns. Chowing down on red meat produces small parallel scratches. Chomping on bones adds larger, deeper pits. Previous methods of dental wear analysis relied on researchers to identify and count these different types of features. DMTA relies on automated software and is considered more accurate because it reduces the possibility of observer bias.

DeSantis and Ungar, with the assistance of Blaine Schubert from East Tennessee State University and Jessica Scott from the University of Arkansas, applied DMTA to the fossil teeth of 15 American lions (Panthera atrox) and 15 saber-tooth cats (Smilodon fatalis) recovered from the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles.

Their analysis revealed that the wear pattern on the teeth of the American lion most closely resembled those of the present-day cheetah, which actively avoids bones when it feeds. Similarly, the saber-tooth cat's wear pattern most closely resembled those of the present-day African lion, which indulges in some bone crushing when it eats. (This differs from a previous microwear study using a different technique that concluded saber-tooth cats avoided bone to a far greater extent.)

The researchers examined how these patterns changed over time by selecting specimens from tar pits of different ages, ranging from about 35,000 to 11,500 years ago. They did not find any evidence that the two carnivores increased their "utilization" of carcasses throughout this period. If anything, their analysis suggests that the proportion of the carcasses that both kinds of cats consumed actually declined toward the end.

The researchers acknowledge the high rate of tooth breakage reported in the previous study, but they argue that it is more likely the result of increased breakage when taking down prey instead of when feeding.

"Teeth can break from the stress of chewing bone but they can also break when the carnivores take down prey," DeSantis pointed out. Species like hyenas that regularly chew and crack bones of their kills are as likely to break the rear teeth they use for chewing as their front canines. Species like the cheetah, however, which avoid bones during feeding are twice as likely to break canines than rear teeth. This suggests that they are more likely to break canines when pulling down prey.

The researchers report that previous examinations of the jaws of the American lions and saber-tooth cats from this period found that they have more than three times as many broken canines and interpret this as additional evidence that supports their conclusion that most of the excess tooth breakage occurred during capture instead of feeding.

In addition, the researchers argue that the large size of the extinct carnivores and their prey can help explain the large number of broken teeth. The saber-toothed cats were about the size of today's African lion and the American lion was about 25 percent larger. The animals that they preyed upon likely included mammoths, four-ton giant ground sloths and 3,500-pound bison.

Larger teeth break more easily than smaller teeth. So larger carnivores are likely to break more canine teeth when attempting to take down larger prey, the researchers argue. They cite a study that modeled the strength of canine teeth that found the canines of a predator the size of fox can support more than seven times its weight before breaking while a predator the size of lion can only support about four times its weight and the curved teeth of the saber-toothed cats can only support about twice its weight.

"The net result of our study is to raise questions about the reigning hypothesis that "tough times" during the late Pleistocene contributed to the gradual extinction of large carnivores," DeSantis summarized. "While we can not determine the exact cause of their demise, it is unlikely that the extinction of these cats was a result of gradually declining prey (due either to changing climates or human competition) because their teeth tell us that these cats were not desperately consuming entire carcasses, as we had expected, and instead seemed to be living the 'good life' during the late Pleistocene, at least up until the very end."

Helpful Shape Up Health And Fitness Advice For A Fit Body | Fitness ...

December 22, 2012 ‐ Posted by Fitness Tips ‐ Under: Fitness Tips

Aerobic fitness training exercises can play a major role in helping you to lose weight. If you are not properly motivated to continue your fitness routine, you are more likely to give it up before it has the chance to begin working. Exercise can be interesting, fun, and something that you are drawn to. You need only look in the right places. There?s no rulebook that says you can?t have fun while working out. If you keep a positive attitude, you?ll find plenty of ways to keep your workouts entertaining. Use these ideas to improve your mindset and start on your path to success.

Play some of your favorite tunes while exercising. Dancing is a wonderful way to get up and get moving. Music makes exercise more enjoyable. Some people associate music with dancing, and music can trick the mind into thinking you are dancing, not exercising. You will not even notice how tired or sore your muscles are when you are enjoying yourself. Music can really boost your motivation to finish up those last few reps.

TIP! If you want pancake-flat, carved-up lower abs and a razor-sharp V-cut, consider The Lower Abs Trifecta your little secret weapon. Comprised of 3 different ab exercises back-to-back, it?ll absolutely demolish your lower abs and leave you sore for days.

Meet up with your friends to exercise. Working out is a great time to catch up on the latest news. Catching up on the latest gossip and chit-chat with a friend is a great way to distract yourself from the fact that you are exercising. Try having a good conversation to distract you. Having a workout buddy will boost your confidence and make working out fun.

You should incorporate workout video games into your exercise regimen. This will help turn your thoughts to playing the game and away from the exercises that you have to do. By directing your focus to the fun you are having, you will forget that you are actually working out, and you won?t get tired!

Invest in clothes that make you feel good about yourself. Well-fitting and attractive workout clothes are a great motivator. Workout apparel and gear come in every style, color, and pattern imaginable, so you can express yourself and have a unique fitness wardrobe. You can easily get creative when putting together an exercise outfit. Having workout gear that you are happy with will help you to get the motivation to exercise.

TIP! You want me to do something? tell me I can?t do it. -Maya Angelou

Repeating, repeating, repeating the same workout is boring, boring, boring. Shake things up. If you get bored, you will exercise less. You may lose faith entirely and stop your work out if you don?t have the right determination. This is why you should change up your routine regularly. Variety is important to keeping yourself interested in work outs. If you stop working out, you will risk losing all of the progress that you have already made.

Give your 100% to a fitness program, set a personal goal and get yourself a gift that you had been waiting on for a long time. This will help you keep focused on your weight loss plan. The rewards can be modest, like a new pair of shoes or a dessert you have been craving. Your reward has to be something that will assist you with motivation. If you don?t look forward to your reward, you may not keep following your fitness goal. It is imperative that you retain your motivation in your quest to lose weight.

Researchers uncover major source of evolutionary differences among species

Friday, December 21, 2012

University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine researchers have uncovered a genetic basis for fundamental differences between humans and other vertebrates that could also help explain why humans are susceptible to diseases not found in other species.

Scientists have wondered why vertebrate species, which look and behave very differently from one another, nevertheless share very similar repertoires of genes. For example, despite obvious physical differences, humans and chimpanzees share a nearly identical set of genes.

The team sequenced and compared the composition of hundreds of thousands of genetic messages in equivalent organs, such as brain, heart and liver, from 10 different vertebrate species, ranging from human to frog. They found that alternative splicing ? a process by which a single gene can give rise to multiple proteins ? has dramatically changed the structure and complexity of genetic messages during vertebrate evolution.

The results suggest that differences in the ways genetic messages are spliced have played a major role in the evolution of fundamental characteristics of species. However, the same process that makes species look different from one another could also account for differences in their disease susceptibility.

"The same genetic mechanisms responsible for a species' identity could help scientists understand why humans are prone to certain diseases such as Alzheimer's and particular types of cancer that are not found in other species," says Nuno Barbosa-Morais, the study's lead author and a computational biologist in U of T Faculty of Medicine's Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research. "Our research may lead to the design of improved approaches to study and treat human diseases."

One of the team's major findings is that the alternative splicing process is more complex in humans and other primates compared to species such as mouse, chicken and frog.

"Our observations provide new insight into the genetic basis of complexity of organs such as the human brain," says Benjamin Blencowe, Professor in U of T's Banting and Best Department of Research and the Department of Molecular Genetics, and the study's senior author.

"The fact that alternative splicing is very different even between closely related vertebrate species could ultimately help explain how we are unique."

The study, "The Evolutionary Landscape of Alternative Splicing in Vertebrate Species", is published in the December 21 issue of Science.

A Natural History of Mistletoe

Mistletoe is frequently spotted hanging above lovers? heads in terrible holiday specials?but only during one month of the year. That makes it easy to forget that more than 1,300 species hang in forests year-round, parasitizing thousands of tree species around the world. Or, rather, hemiparasitizing, which means the plant is partially self-sufficient: it has its own leaves to collect sunlight to convert into energy, but feeds off of a host tree for water and nutrients.

White mistletoe berries.

Semantics aside, mistletoe has been long-considered the epitome of the word ?parasite:? a blood-sucking bush that plugs into trunks and branches, strangling and killing trees around the world. This airborne parasitism is so successful that mistletoes are thought to have evolved it five separate times on their own.

But the purely negative opinion is starting to change. Mistletoe may parasitize trees, but it also provides valuable services to forest animals. Its flower nectar and berries are a food source for birds, insects (such as moths, beetles, bees and flies), and mammals. Its greenery is a resource-rich patch used as shelter and, for some birds, a sweet nesting spot.

Australian mistletoebird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum), a mistletoe specialist.

How does mistletoe get up on a tree trunk in the first place? In short: sticky poop. Mistletoes rely heavily on birds and mammals to distribute their seeds; in fact, 90 species of birds in 10 families are considered mistletoe specialists. The berries are brightly colored and covered in a sticky glue called viscin, which can survive an animal?s digestive tract. Thus, even after its been pooped out, the seed can still stick to the nearest branch? or to another animal to ferry it elsewhere.

Once smeared onto a proper spot on a tree trunk or branch, the mistletoe seed germinates and sprouts a penetration peg that mechanically drills down into the tree until it hits a nutrient pipe. The peg is then followed by a haustorium, the root that plugs into the arboreal host to draw off nutrients and water. The next step is growing leaves, flowers and berries, a process that can take 2-6 years in some species.

Once it blossoms, the magic begins, and the mistletoe plant sprouts flowers and nectar to feed insects and birds, such as hummingsbirds. After they are fertilized, these flowers turn into berries? and the process begins all again.

Western dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium campylopodum) sprouting midtrunk.

Mistletoe also provides a broader ecosystem service: it provides abundant nutrients to the forest floor when it drops its leaves. Most leaf-losing trees hoard their precious nutrients, and suck their leaves of every last nutrient-rich drop before they let them fly. But, because of their parasitic nature, mistletoe plants aren?t too concerned with preserving nutrients?they can always just steal some more from their host! So down go the nutrient-rich leaves, which stimulate the growth of other plants (and the host trees themselves).

This may be a more important ecosystem process than producing fruit, flowers, and nesting shelter. In a?recent study, scientists removed the mistletoe from stands of?eucalyptus forest in Australia. Three years later, one-fifth of vertebrate species previously living there had left the woodlands?an astounding result. Because many of these species that abandoned ship ate insects on the forest floor, the authors believe this leaf-litter mechanism explains the biodiversity loss more than the removal of mistletoe berries and flowers.

Its those same beautiful berries that attract birds and bees to spread mistletoe seeds that compelled Europeans to decorate their living rooms with it around Christmastime. (Well, that and pagan culture.) So next time you see some hanging at a party, forget the kiss?grab your girl or guy by the arm and explain that you want to get hemiparasitic with them.

'Heart resilience' biomarker may help predict chemotherapy-induced cardiac damage earlier

Dec. 21, 2012 ? By using a blend of high definition cardiac imaging and biomarkers, Ohio State University cancer and heart researchers think they may have a way to catch early heart damage caused by anthracyclines, a class of chemotherapy drugs commonly used to treat breast and childhood cancers.

Presented at the recent San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, and funded by the Ohio State Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), the study looked at breast cancer patients being treated with doxorubicin, a type of anthracycline that is effective at treating breast cancer, but may lead to future heart problems in some women long after the treatment is complete.

"Currently, we are unable to predict who is more likely to develop heart problems, and we usually only catch the damage once it's too late." said Dr. Maryam Lustberg, a breast oncologist at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center -- Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James). "If we could identify these at-risk patients earlier, we could introduce cardio-protective drugs or eliminate cardio-toxic drugs."

The study honed in on measuring epithelial progenitor cells (EPCs) -- a rare cell type found in the bloodstream that can indicate cardiac reserve, a measure of how resilient the heart can be in recovering from various insults. EPC levels are a well-established predictor of outcomes in patients with heart attacks or heart disease, but the researchers are the first to explore their use in predicting which chemotherapy patients may be at highest risk for developing cardiac injury after exposure to anthrcyclines.

In addition to looking at EPCs, researchers analyzed heart function and physical changes to the heart using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), as well as measuring blood levels of troponin and BNP, two biomarkers that indicate cardiac damage. Measurements were taken before, during and after the course of treatment, which for breast cancer patients, typically lasts about two months.

Researchers found that patients who came in with lower EPCs were more likely to have higher levels of troponin in their blood by the end of treatment. While the treatment was well-tolerated, and there were no acute indications of damage to heart function, the researchers also identified a trend in physical changes in the heart, including increased water content in heart cells and indications that the heart was working less efficiently.

Dr. Subha Raman a cardiologist and professor of cardiovascular medicine at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center noted, "By pairing CMR with measuring the amount of chemical messengers in the blood stream, we're building a solid foundation that may help us develop a predictive model in the future."

The researchers plan to reassess patients at 12 and 24 months, and hope to follow the study group for as long as five years in order to capture more data.

"This kind of research is a testament to the fact that survival rates after a cancer diagnosis have never been higher. We want to make sure that life after cancer treatment is as healthy as possible," said Lustberg.

Senate requires $3.4 billion spending offsets for Sandy aid bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Friday required that $3.4 billion of the superstorm Sandy reconstruction aid bill be offset by spending cuts next year, a move that Democrats said set a "dangerous precedent" for future disaster funding.

The requirement on the $60.4 billion measure, which came as the result of a Republican procedural move, could open the door to future requirements to "pay for" disaster assistance with spending cuts. Congress in the past has simply funded disaster aid without such offsets.

The Senate advanced the Sandy aid bill by voting to end general debate and start considering some 21 amendments, many from Republicans aimed at chopping out specific spending requests - including one that would shrink the whole package down to $23.8 billion.

Votes on the amendments and on final passage of the legislation are expected next week after the Senate returns from the Christmas holiday.

The Senate on Friday failed to muster the 60 votes needed to defeat a budget point of order maneuver raised by Republican Senator Pat Toomey. This required that $3.4 billion worth of "mitigation" projects to prevent damage from future storms be included under a cap on discretionary federal spending.

"This will mean real consequences this year," said Democratic senator Barbara Mikulski, the new chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. "This is a $3.4 billion unspecified cut that will go to domestic programs for fiscal 2013."

Mikulski, of Maryland, said the cuts would have to be included in spending bills next year that replace a stopgap government funding measure on March 27.

Arguing to defeat the requirement, Senator Charles Schumer of New York, which suffered massively from Sandy's storm surge, said that the move would mark the first requirement for offsetting disaster funds with cuts elsewhere, setting the stage for more congressional fights over it.

"That will mean that disaster money will be much less readily available in the future. The precedent is an awful one," Schumer said.

Toomey, a conservative from Pennsylvania, argued that the $3.4 billion worth of mitigation projects were not disaster aid but simply infrastructure improvement projects.

"That kind of infrastructure spending is the kind of spending that we do routinely, but we plan for it and we budget it," he said. "If it is indeed the priority that many people, including myself, believe that it is, then it ought to be weighed in competition with the other pressing needs."

A senate Republican said the projects targeted in the point of order were not those tied to immediate repairs or reconstruction work, but those that were considered "stand-alone" mitigation projects.

Brothers Grimm saved classic fairy tales by changing them forever

Disney wasn't the first to change Grimm's Fairy Tales. Even the Brothers Grimm tinkered with their stories from one edition to another.?

By Chris Gaylord,?Staff writer / December 20, 2012

Google celebrated the 200th anniversary of 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' on Thursday.

Google

There's a certain irony to "Grimm's Fairy Tales." Two-hundred years ago today, Jacob Grimm?and his younger brother Wilhelm published a collection of folk tales. The Grimms didn't write these stories; they collected tales that had been handed down from generation to generation. The Brothers Grimm worried that industrialization would erase these classics from memory. So they set out to protect these ancient tales.

However, in preserving?this rich tradition, the Brothers Grimms changed the stories forever.

Many readers would be shocked to look at the first-edition stories of Rapunzel, The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty,?or?Snow White. Their plots have changed a lot over the years.

Disney sanitized them, scrubbing away the unsavory parts. Hollywood further reworked them with the recent Kristen Stewart film?"Snow White and The Huntsman," the animated movie "Tangled,"?and Matt Damon's "The Brothers Grimm."?ABC and NBC borrowed from the brothers with last year's TV series "Grimm" and "Once Upon A Time."?Author Philip Pullman completely rewrote the stories in his new book, "Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm."

In fact, even Jacob and Wilhelm changed the fairy tales from one edition to another.

Even though the Grimms's collection was originally titled "Children's and Household Tales," the book?was not written for kids. The brothers imagined their "Fairy Tails" as an academic anthology. It was the work of scholars, compiled by and for serious adults. However, as the books became more popular, the Grimms faced harsh?criticism. Parents found the stories far too dark. Churches thought they were not Christian enough.

So, the Brothers Grimm started editing.

The wicked mothers of Snow White and Hansel and Gretel turned into wicked?stepmothers.?

They stripped out sexual references, such as in Rapunzel. In the original "Grimm" version, an evil witch holds?Rapunzel captive in a tower. One day, a prince visits her in secret. He later escapes without alerting the witch, but Rapunzel spills the beans. How? She innocently asks why her dress doesn't fit anymore. For some reason, it's now too tight around the belly. It didn't take long for the witch to realize that?Rapunzel was now pregnant. In later editions, the Brother Grimm took out this and other references to premarital sex.

As prurient material came out, some of the violence actually intensified ??especially?the punishments for sinful?villains.

The third Grimm brother, Emil, added Christian symbols into the illustrations. For example, Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother soon had a Bible on her bedside table.?

The brothers published 17 different editions between 1812 and 1864 ? plenty of time to "correct" these tales.

In a way, it's fitting that everyone from Disney to Mr. Pullman?has reworked "Grimm's Fairy Tales." The Grimms gathered their stories from European oral tradition. The whole reason that the Brothers Grimm wanted to preserve?these stories was because they'd been passed down over so many generations?? and no doubt tweaked,?embellished, and censored along the way.?

As the "Fairy Tales" grew more conservative, they also became more popular. Parents finally felt comfortable reading them to kids, giving these traditional tales new momentum. Now, 200 years later, we still know the story of?Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Snow White ? even if some of the details disappeared into history.

It leads one to wonder: If?Jacob and Wilhelm had not redacted their stories, would we still know about them today?

A swoosh in space: Merry Christmas from Hubble

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Planetary nebulae represent a final brief stage in the life of a star like the Sun. While consuming the last of the fuel in its core, the star expels a large portion of its outer regions, which then heats up and glows brightly, showing intricate structures that scientists are still trying to fully understand. The structure visible within NGC 5189 is particularly dramatic, and Hubble's image of the nebula is by far the most detailed yet made of this object [1].

Hubble has been a key tool for studying planetary nebulae for years, and many of its images have become famous. As well as being highly attractive, planetary nebulae tell us about the ultimate fate of the Sun, which will form such a nebula when it runs out of fuel in a little over five billion years.

These nebulae were named by astronomers studying them through early telescopes with little magnification and optics that were far from sharp. The brightly coloured nebulae are often roughly spherical, and many appear green or blue like Uranus and Neptune, so their appearance evoked that of gas giant planets like those in the outer Solar System.

Many of them do indeed look somewhat planetlike, but NGC 5189 certainly does not: the nebula forms a dramatic reverse S-shape.

Looking at the detail of Hubble's image, possible thanks to Hubble's very high resolution, the nebula shows a series of dense knots in the clouds of gas. The gas and radiation flowing out from the dying star carves out shapes in the clouds, forming glowing bow-wave-like patterns towards the centre of the nebula.

The knots in NGC 5189 are a reminder of just how vast the planetary nebula is. They might look like mere details in this image, but each and every one is a similar size to the entire Solar System.

The star at the centre of the nebula, a dense white dwarf, is far too small to see as anything other than a point of light, even though it is roughly the size of the Earth.

The overall shape of NGC 5189 can counterintuitively tell us about what is happening on very small scales around the tiny central star. NGC 5189's shape is reminiscent of a lawn sprinkler, with matter being expelled from the star, which is wobbling as it rotates.

Similar structures have been seen before, especially in planetary nebulae with binary stars at their centres. This is also a likely explanation for the structure of NGC 5189, though to date, only one star has been found at the nebula's centre.

As tornado recovery costs rise, FEMA pays more, Alabama and local governments pay less

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- In the 18 months since dozens of tornadoes wreaked havoc across Alabama, the cost for recovery has steadily risen.

Bad?

No good! At least from the perspective of cash-strapped state and local governments who are getting a $27 million federal reimbursement.

That's five Nick Saban salaries.

And the money comes strictly due to those rising recovery costs.

Here's how it works: When the cost of the disaster rises to a certain threshold, it triggers the Federal Emergency Management Agency to chip in with a larger share of federal dollars.

FEMA generally pays 75 percent of disaster recovery costs. But using a formula based on the census, if a disaster surpasses a per capita dollar amount, FEMA's share increases to 90 percent.

The magic number for the April, 2011 tornadoes in Alabama was $130 per person or, $564.7 million, which was surpassed several weeks ago.

For the city of Tuscaloosa, it means an extra $825,000.

Total costs for Tuscaloosa are about $11 million, said Robin Edgeworth, director of the city's Recovery Operations Department.

Under the old formula, FEMA paid 75 percent and the city and state split the remaining 25 percent. That 12.5 percent share meant a city tab of $1,375,000.

With FEMA taking on 90 percent of the cost, Tuscaloosa, splitting the remaining 10 percent with the state, is only on the hook for 5 percent, or $550,000.

"This is great news for us and the state," Edgeworth said. "It might seem strange that we got to this point by having so much damage. But I'm glad all of the municipalities were able to document it and that we were able to reach the cost threshold."

Overall, some 300 governmental entities are saving a combined $17 million. These include not only city and county governments, but school boards, some utility districts, etc. The state government is saving about $10 million to put the overall state savings at $27 million, said Yasamie August, spokeswoman for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, which coordinates with FEMA.

Madison County, the city of Huntsville, and several smaller entities are looking at a savings of $435,000 combined, said Bill Sizemore, accountant for the Madison County Emergency Management Agency.

Sizemore said it will actually be a reimbursement.

"All the money we were going to spend has essentially already been spent," Sizemore said.

Having surpassed the threshold of $564.7 million, overall recovery costs for the state now stands at $579.3 million paid through such programs as Public Assistance, Individual Assistance, Mitigation and Mission Assignments, August said.

Regarding the increased federal share, a spokeswoman for Gov. Robert Bentley released this statement:

"The damage to Alabama in the wake of the April 2011 tornadoes was extensive. We knew then that we would probably meet the damage assessment threshold. This is the next step in helping Alabama and local municipalities with the financial resources to recover from the tornadoes."

Of course the increased share by the federal government under the cost-sharing plan isn't free money.

As noted in a review of the policy by Francis X. McCarthy, a congressional emergency management policy analyst:

"Cost-share waivers can be a great help to a state and its communities seeking to recover from a disaster event and reeling from the economic problems caused by the disaster. But such actions also reduce the supplemental nature of Stafford Act funding through the increase of the federal share."

In other tornado funding news, Bentley this morning announced that $15.7 million will be awarded to nine local governments for long-term recovery. The governments splitting the money, from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, are: Cordova, DeKalb County, Franklin County, Hackleburg, Marion County, Moulton, Phil Campbell, Tuscaloosa City and Tuscaloosa County.

More than 250 people were killed, and 2,200 people were injured during a two-week period in April 2011 when the state was struck by multiple tornadoes. The majority of the damage and deaths came on April 27, when 62 tornadoes raked the state from south to north. According to FEMA, 6,237 houses and 1,275 mobile homes were destroyed.

NFL announces Super Bowl XLVII will be streamed live by CBS

Last year, the National Football League took a massive step forward when it announced it would be live streaming the biggest game of the year for the first time ever -- at least officially. Said move was mostly deemed a pretty good success, to say the least, with the sporting event netting around 2.1 million unique viewers back then -- as such, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the NFL's looking to come back for round two on February 3rd. Earlier today, Roger Goodell & Co. announced the upcoming Super Bowl XLVII is set to follow suit and be streamed on the interwebs as well, however this year's streaming duties will be handled by CBS instead of NBC -- and the NFL's own website, of course. Additionally, Verizon subscribers can get it on the action straight from their smartphone via the the NFL Mobile application, just as they were able to during the Giants vs. Patriots face-off. We still have some time until the next iteration of the Big Game, so here's to hoping your favorite team shows up in New Orleans and makes the entire experience that much better for you.

Benghazi panel: Security insufficient at consulate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The leaders of the panel that reviewed the deadly Sept. 11 attack in Libya say insufficient security staffing led to the weaknesses at the diplomatic post in lawless Benghazi.

Admiral Mike Mullen says State Department bureaus hadn't assumed shared responsibility for security and that Libyan teams assigned to back up U.S. personnel hadn't performed well. He says the mission's security fell through bureaucratic cracks because buildings had been categorized as temporary.

Retired Ambassador Thomas Pickering said "They did the best they possibly could with what they had but what they had wasn't enough."

The two spoke shortly after briefing members of Congress behind closed doors. Earlier Wednesday, three State Department officials resigned under pressure after the report blamed security problems on management failures.

PFT: Report: Seattle CB Sherman's appeal Friday

New York Jets v Tennessee TitansGetty Images

OK, who had Week 15 in the pool?

The Jets defense has apparently had enough of the non-support, and finally aired the grievances after last night?s 14-10 loss to the Titans, which ended their faint playoff hopes.

?Story of our season. Shooting yourself in the foot, over and over and over again,? Jets linebacker Calvin Pace said, via Seth Walder of the New York Daily News. ?I don?t care who you?re playing, you can?t beat anybody if you turn the ball over five times.?

Thanks to playing one of their peers, the Jets were still in the game after all the interceptions, but a Sanchez fumble to top it was too much to bear.

?We have to play an opponent and play ourself. Can?t win like that,? Pace said.

Asked if it was frustrating to watch the offense struggle, Pace replied: ?Yeah.?

Even when they got the ball at the Titans 25 in the final seconds, there wasn?t a tremendous confidence.

?Like I said, I play defense,? safety LaRon Landry said. ?My mindset on the sidelines? I hope they want to capitalize. I hope they want to win.?

Pace did say all the blame couldn?t be placed solely on the offense, after all they allowed a 94-yard touchdown run by Chris Johnson. And the Titans best drive of the night (faint praise) came after Sanchez had given the Jets a 10-7 lead.

But other than the long run, Johnson gained 28 yards on his other 20 carries.

But with an offense they can?t count on, there?s a constant pressure on the Jets defense to play perfectly.

?It is [a lot of pressure],? Pace said. ?It?s nerve-racking.?

More than even the turnovers, the lack of confidence in Sanchez by his teammates will be the thing that undermines his career there, and invite another offseason of questions about the position.

Massachusetts fines Morgan Stanley over Facebook IPO

BOSTON (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley , the lead underwriter for Facebook Inc's initial public offering, will pay a $5 million fine to Massachusetts for violating securities laws governing how investment research can be distributed.

Massachusetts' top securities regulator, William Galvin, on Monday charged that a top Morgan Stanley banker had improperly coached Facebook on how to disclose sensitive financial information selectively, perpetuating what he calls "an unlevel playing field" between Wall Street and Main Street.

Morgan Stanley has faced criticism since Facebook went public in May for revealing revised earnings and revenue forecasts to select clients before the media company's $16 billion initial public offering.

This is the first time a case stemming from Morgan Stanley's handling of the Facebook offering has been decided.

Facebook had privately told Wall Street research analysts about softer forecasts because of less robust mobile revenues. A top Morgan Stanley banker coached Facebook executives on how to get the message out, Galvin said.

A Morgan Stanley spokeswoman said on Monday the company is "pleased to have reached a settlement" and that it is "committed to robust compliance with both the letter and the spirit of all applicable regulations and laws." The company neither admitted nor denied any wrongdoing.

Galvin, who has been aggressive in policing how research is distributed on Wall Street ever since investment banks reached a global settlement in 2003, said the bank violated that settlement. He fined Citigroup $2 million over similar charges in late October.

"The conduct at Morgan Stanley was more egregious," he said in an interview explaining the amount of the fine. "With it we will get their attention and begin to take steps in restoring some confidence for retail investors to invest."

Galvin also said that his months-long investigation into the Facebook IPO is far from over and that he continues to review the other banks involved. Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan also acted as underwriters. The underwriting fee for all underwriters was reported to be $176 million at the time, or 1.1 percent of the proceeds.

Massachusetts did not name the Morgan Stanley banker in its documents but personal information detailed in the matter suggest it is Michael Grimes, a top technology banker.

The state said the banker helped a Facebook executive release new information and then guided the executive on how to speak with Wall Street analysts about it. The banker, Galvin said, rehearsed with Facebook's Treasurer and wrote the bulk of the script Facebook's Treasurer used when calling the research analysts.

A number of Wall Street analysts cut their growth estimates for Facebook in the days before the IPO after the company filed an amended prospectus.

Facebook's treasurer then quickly called a number for Wall Street analysts providing even more information.

The banker "was not allowed to call research analysts himself, so he did everything he could to ensure research analysts received new revenue numbers which they then provided to institutional investors," Galvin said.

Galvin's consent order also says that the banker spoke with company lawyers and then to Facebook's chief financial officer about how to prove an update "without creating the appearance of not providing the underlying trend information to all investors."

The banker and all others involved with the matter at Morgan Stanley are still employed by the company, a person familiar with the matter said.

Retail investors were not given any similar information, Galvin said, saying this case illustrates how institutional investors often have an edge over retail investors.

Investigation into Benghazi attack complete

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An independent investigation into the deadly Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, is complete, and Congress will be briefed on its findings this week, the State Department said Monday.

The classified report by the Accountability Review Board will be sent to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, a day before the panel's two most senior members will testify in closed session before the House and Senate foreign affairs committees. The board was established to examine the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

An unclassified version of the report is expected to be released to the public after board chairman Thomas Pickering, a former ambassador, and Adm. Mike Mullen, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, appear at Wednesday's hearings, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

The House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations committees will then hear open testimony on the report on Thursday from William Burns and Thomas Nides, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's two main deputies, Nuland said.

Clinton created the board in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack to look into security procedures before and during the incident in which heavily armed militants laid siege to the mission and a nearby CIA annex. She had been scheduled to appear before the committees this week, but canceled after fainting and sustaining a concussion while recovering from a stomach virus that left her severely dehydrated.

Nuland said Clinton had been given a copy of the report on Monday. She added that Clinton was "on the mend" but was obeying her doctors' recommendations to stay at home this week and recuperate. Clinton had canceled a trip to North Africa and the Middle East last week because of the ailment.

In a letter sent on Monday to the two committees, Clinton said it was her hope to release as much of the report to the public as possible though there were limits due to classified information.

She said she looked forward to "engaging the committees in January," though it was unclear whether that would mean public testimony or simply conversations to answer questions.

Clinton also thanked lawmakers for their well-wishes as she recovers from the concussion.

US Department of Labor awards $10 million to International Rescue Committee to combat child labor in Tanzania

WASHINGTON ? The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of International Labor Affairs today awarded $10 million for a cooperative agreement with the International Rescue Committee to combat child labor in Tanzania. The project will target regions where there is a prevalence of child labor in agriculture and domestic service.

The International Rescue Committee will partner on this project with World Vision, the Foundation for Civil Society, Kiota Women's Health Development, the Tanga Youth Development Association and The Institute for Development Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam.

These organizations will help provide services to protect children from the worst forms of child labor. The project will get children into school, train youths in business and entrepreneurial skills, help raise household income, and link families to existing village community banks and social protection services. It also will work with local and national government to build their capacity to implement policies to eliminate child labor.

Since 1995, ILAB projects have rescued approximately 1.5 million children from exploitive child labor. The Labor Department has funded 260 such projects implemented by more than 65 organizations in 91 countries. ILAB currently oversees more than $210 million of active programming to combat the worst forms of child labor. More information is available at http://www.dol.gov/ilab/.

Scott Sonnon ? Blog Archive ? See Beauty - Become Beauty

December 16, 2012 ? 11:48 am

Lisa Shrout, an outwardly very pretty, 24 year old posted this to my page this morning, ?i admit you do look good for as old as you are but your face does not. it tells of your age. let us know when you master that. lucky for us ladies we age better.? Her comment reflects the cliff we can slide down as a society into the veneer of appearance (ibid ?Shallow Hal?).

My face doesn?t look like a punching bag from age unfortunately. Born in the shared genetic backwoods of Pennsyl-tucky and choosing a career of getting hit in the face for a living doesn?t increase your chances of being on magazine covers (Oh wait, yes it did. ;) So, I married a near-sighted hot woman of my dreams, who was blind to any outward flaws because she loves me for my character virtues and service to others. (I still hide her eye-glasses to keep it stacked in my favor.)

Lisa thinks my ?body looks good,? though I don?t train for looks. I merely appear like myself excelling at what I love to do, and how I love to move. I love martial arts - all of them - and their diverse methods of alternative health and fitness. Although I walk every day between 6-8%BF at 43, and hold several world championships in a multiple sports, able to outperform competitors half my age and 100lbs heavier, we can still be judged on how others define ?beauty? in media.

I?ve seen very young people cave from the pressure of not being able to change their appearance due to social pressure; some tragically with fatal conclusiveness. I?ve seen even adults be manipulated by the media into believing that they need to look like they did when they were younger, with severe consequences for not realizing that you train differently at different ages with 100% the ?beauty.?

Beauty is how you see the world. If you see ugliness everywhere, it reflects how you feel about yourself. Unfortunately, for Lisa, though she?s outwardly a very pretty young lady right now, she sees too much ugliness inside and fears aging and losing her fading youth. If she doesn?t evolve, life will repeatedly thrust at her more obstreperous examples of this lesson, until it takes away her outwardly defined ?beauty? altogether, so that she addresses the myopia of ugliness with which she filters her world.

See the beauty. Train for health and fitness. Improve your performance in your lifestyle. Celebrate others who do the same. Support those who do not yet know how.

The only time you should be looking down on someone is when you?re helping them up because they asked for your assistance.

very respectfully,
Scott Sonnon

Article: Love and Let Love | ThinkUp

?
?
?

Article submitted exclusively to: Think Up
Author: Alia Al Hazami?

?
?
?

Hatred comes so easily. It eats you up and spits you out leaving you in a resenting state, loathing everything and everyone for no reason whatsoever. Hate is a strong word and I?m absolutely abashed to admit that I use it with complete freedom, not giving the harm and emotional hurt it gives to others a second thought. I?m working on myself. Self improvement is what I seek.
?

To me, sadness is not the opposite of happiness; it?s hatred. Hatred consumes you creating sadness. It stops you from living life to the fullest and it definitely builds obstacles that come in the way of your success.
Life is all about happiness; it?s what drives success. In order to have a life full of joy and achievements, love has to be present beforehand. It gives you the sensation of accomplishment and happiness. Hatred pushes people away. What?s the use of achieving when there is no one to share your happiness with? When you reach the point of success and realize that there?s no one to celebrate it with you, it instantly turns your joy into misery.
?
?
?

?
?
?
I know that all that?s said at the current time is ?Live for now? or ?Live like there?s no tomorrow? and I?m completely into it, but at certain situations, the future is all you need to think about. Obviously, everyone wants to enjoy life but that isn?t an excuse to be reckless. You need to make something out of yourself. You need to plan for a bright career and a future worth living for. Live like there?s no tomorrow but seek your future?s welfare as well.
?

Everlasting joy can be accomplished in one way, expressing love. I made a resolution last year to radiate love but sadly, I failed. I by no means tried properly. I used to throw the word ?hate? like it meant nothing. It was completely wrong of me. I discovered that the only way I can truly spread love and happiness is by allowing others in. I never really allowed people into my life. All my friendships started with resentment and that was a huge mistake that I lived with. I was misguided. As a writer I want to help people become the best person they could be. I want to help others in similar issues by taking advantage of my drama and help them face theirs in a better way. Love and let love is my advice.
?
?
?

?
?
?
Convincing yourself that you?re up for the challenge of searching for happiness itself will turn you into a loving person. I go through so many phases that I couldn?t keep up with them anymore and realization struck me that I?m ruining myself. Though I?m doing it unwillingly, it?s still considered self-demolition. I realized that in a way I was actually spreading an aura of detestation. I was someone you definitely wouldn?t want to be around.
?

I decided to grow as a person. I learnt something from all my phases and a dear person; to rise above people and be the better individual. Let them throw hatred; let them bully. Their words are their weapons; their aim is to ruin anyone who craves success so why bother with their selfishness? Words do hurt you emotionally but rise above all the pain and exude love.
?
?
?

?
?
?
Love is a universal language spoken only by those who possess a pure heart. Humans go through various ordeals, pain and sorrows but remembering that their pain will one day benefit their success must solicit to determination. Have faith that after all the troubles you went through, someway someday you will get rewarded. As long as you hunt improvement and success, the only obstacle that comes in the way of your success is your own self.
?

Letting people get to you won?t benefit you, so why give in? Humans are complex organisms. They let emotions control them. I understand that that happens involuntarily, but at times we have to get a grip of ourselves and take control of what we feel. No matter what happens, replace your sadness with happiness, your resentment with love. Only then, will you understand the true value of the wonderful life we?re given.
